THE SENSATION OF FIDGET SPINNERS

THE SENSATION OF FIDGET SPINNERS

Digital Imaging, Fall 2021

Sensation: cause of such excitement

Monument: a lasting evidence, reminder, or example of someone or something notable or great

With social media and our contemporary news reporting individuals or groups can go viral for a moment and then disappear from notice, what does it take to make a lasting versus fleeting impact? Create an experimental, interactive zine exploring the idea of sensationalism or monumentalism in the modern world.

IDEATION

The fidget spinner has been around since 1993, however it became popular in 2017. This rise to fame brought attention to the market of sensory toys created for anxiety and stress relief. “Anxiety disorders affect about

15 -30 percent of adolescents in U.S.” according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. These toys are able to those dealing with anxiety, ADHD and stress to productively cope with their fidgeting rather than tapping their legs or biting their nails.

Colors: I chose teal and mint because they are colors commonly associated with mental health. Teal is the color of the anxiety disorder awareness ribbon and it embodies restfulness and balance. The color mint is associated with tranquility and freshness. The shades of gray emphasize the idea of disconnection between human body and the external world.

Text: The pairing of a high-contrast, serif font for the titles with a low-contrast, sans serif font for the body text creates a clear sense of hierarchy in the zine.

INTERACTIVE ZINE

PROTOTYPE

For the interactive zine, I kept the basic structure of original zine, but ideated different ways in which I could create interactions and movement. Instead of creating a linear format similar to the zine, I wanted to allow for flexibility through the use of a landing page housing the four topics that the audience can choose between – History of Fidget Spinners, Types of Fidget Tools, Mental Illnesses, and Backlash. From the landing page viewers could navigate through topics of their choice in any order they desire.
